Essure Procedure FAQ: Your Guide to Essure Tubal Ligation

Author: Stephine Kramer, M.D., Board Certified-Diplomate

What is Essure?

Choosing the birth control method that’s right for you is a big decision. When the choice includes a form of permanent birth control, like Essure®, the decision becomes even more important.

Essure is a non-surgical permanent birth control procedure. In fact it’s the only form of non-surgical birth control, with a success rate of more than 99% (based on five-year clinical study data).

The FDA-approved Essure procedure, which we perform in-office in our Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert locations, takes just 10 minutes to complete. Patients go home about 45 minutes later, and return to their normal routines just a day or two after the procedure. Over 750,000 women have chosen this non-surgical, non-hormonal birth control procedure.

Who needs Essure?

Women at East Valley Women’s Medical Group choose to have the Essure procedure in Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert for a number of reasons:

  • They have finished having children – or know they don’t want to have any children.
  • They want a birth control option that’s not susceptible to user error (the pill, patch, condoms, etc.).
  • They want a permanent birth control option that doesn’t require surgery.
  • They don’t want their birth control to affect their hormones – nor do they want to accept the potential risks and side effects of altering the body’s natural hormonal balance.

How is the Essure procedure performed?

The Essure procedure is performed in-office by a trained physician. During the procedure, the physician inserts two tiny coils into the fallopian tubes. Over the next three months, scar tissue naturally develops around these coils, completely blocking the fallopian tubes, thereby preventing sperm from coming into contact with the egg and fertilizing it. Many women say that the procedure is pain-free and only slightly uncomfortable.
